Honduran Citizen Charged with Attempting to Use an Explosive Device in Popular Miami Mall

Honduran citizen Vicente Adolfo Solano, 53, living in Miami, is facing charges for allegedy planning to detonate a weapon of mass destruction in a Miami shopping mall. The announcement was made by Acting Attorney General for National Security Dana J. Boente Acting U.S. Attorney Benjamin G. Greenberg for the Southern District of Florida, and Acting Special Agent in Charge Timothy R. Langan of the FBI's Miami Field Office.

The complaint details Solano's plan to set off an explosive device in a crowded area of a popular mall. He discussed his intentions with a confidential source and two undercover FBI agents. Solano also shared three videos with the source, expressing pro-ISIS views and anti-U.S. sentiments.

Before his arrest, Solano obtained what he thought was an explosive device, prepared it for detonation, and approached a mall entrance to execute his plan. However, the device was harmless and posed no threat to the public. If found guilty, Solano could face life imprisonment and a fine of $250,000.

The actual sentence, if any, will be determined by the court after considering the Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors. Solano's pre-trial detention hearing is set for Thursday, Oct. 25, and his arraignment for Monday, Nov. 6. Solano entered the U.S. on a tourist visa and was granted temporary legal status for humanitarian reasons in 2002.

The defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. The FBI's investigative efforts were praised by Mr. Boente and Mr. Greenberg. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Karen Gilbert of the Southern District of Florida and Trial Attorney Jolie Zimmerman of the National Security Division's Counterterrorism Section.
