- and Westeros are two States in the Martinus region of the North Atlantic. Archaeological records show that the Essosi were first to colonise the region in the 11005. They established a number of small villages, and traded amongst themselves, but did little to explore the region. Several decades later, the Westerosi came to the Martinus region, but were unaware of the existence of the Essosi in Martinus. They too established settlements in the region, setting up a central governmental authority which instituted a system of taxes and levies on inhabitants. They also thoroughly mapped the region, and set up a series of outposts for cataloguing the flora and fauna of the Martinus region. It was during this exploration period that the Westerosi encountered the Essosi. Tensions between the two peoples endured for several decades, but did not erupt into full-blown conflict. Over time, the Essosi and Westerosi established distinct areas of control and influence, and these areas eventually became the States of Essos and Westeros. However, one area that remained in dispute was the Vale, a strip of territory between them where they had been unable to agree an exact boundary. The Vale is a particularly fertile area of territory, which both the Essosi and Westerosi depended on for agricultural purposes. Over time, the Vale became important for cultural and religious purposes: Essosi historical records demonstrate that they used the Vale for important religious ceremonies, while Westerosi records show that they too used the land for their own cultural practices. Several important archaeological sites, significant to both the Essosi and Westerosi, are located in the Vale. Ongoing disputes between farmers and other inhabitants in the Vale led the Essos and Westeros governments to sign an agreement between them over control of the Vale. After enlisting the help of a neutral third party negotiator _. The treaty aimed to equitably divide the Vale between Westeros and Essos, following a natural geographical divide known as the Vale Rift, formed by the Vale Rift River. In doing this WEAV placed the Temple of Daenerys on the Essos side of the border. However, when writing up the agreement, one of the scribes mistakenly drew the border as following a tributary of the Vale Rift River, which resulted in the Temple of Daenerys appearing to be within Westerosi territory. None of the parties to WEAV noticed this when it came time to sign the agreement. As the years passed, the terms of WEAV were respected by both parties. Essosi dignitaries visited Westeros, and were taken on tours of the Temple; in one instance, the Minister for Essosi Foreign Affairs was taken to the Temple and introduced to the Temple Elders as 'an honoured visitor to our lands'. However, by early 2016, anti-Westerosi sentiment was rising in Essos, in part due to Essosi belief that immigration from Westeros was resulting in unemployment and lack of housing affordability. A history professor at the University of Essos, Dr Xaro Xhoan Daxos, came across the original drafting documents for WEAV and was horrified to see that the Temple of Daenerys was meant to be in Essosi territory. He launched a campaign on Twitter, calling on the Essosi to 'take back the Temple for Essos'. Essosi protesters attempted to cross the border to occupy the Temple; Westerosi military and police prevented the incursion. Border skirmishes continued until the E5505 and Westeros governments agreed to take the issue to an international tribunal for arbitration.
