Animal Nutritionist intend to assess the feasibility of growing fodder. They wish to compare the biomass yield for three varieties, Alfalfa (Treatment 1), Oat hay (Treatment 2) and Orchard grass (Treatment 3). The experiments are to be conducted in Texas, Nebraska and Ohio. Three students were assigned to conduct the trials as part of their degree projects. Saskia selected 1 plot in Texas, 1 plot in Ohio and 1 plot in Nebraska and allocated a different treatment to each of the plots at random. Quest selected 2 plots in Texas for Treatment 1, 2 plots in Nebraska for Treatment 2 and 2 plots in Ohio for Treatment 3. Hannah selected 6 plots in Texas, 6 plots in Nebraska and 6 plots in Ohio so that each Treatment was randomly allocated to 2 plots in each state. (a) By allocating one plot to each treatment, identify the experimental principle that Saskia violated. Identify any two advantages of this principle in designing of experiments and analysis of data? (3) (b) What mistake did Quest make in her design? What was compromised by making such a mistake? (3) (c) Write a comment on Hannah's experimental design. (2)
