For a discount bond, the total return is comprised of current yield and capital gains yield.

Total return = current yield + capital gains yield

Premium Bond

Since the bond is issued at a premium, there would be capital loss. Therefore, total return would be current yield plus capital loss yield.

Total return = current yield + capital loss yield

When the market interest rate is lower than the coupon rate, that means the bond issuer is paying a higher interest rate than what the market is paying, the bond is issued at premium. Since the bond pays a higher interest, investors are willing to pay the premium for the bond.
