Van Bemmel Steamship Company was a small U.S. flag carrier operating only one vessel on a regular route between the East Coast and Japan via the Panama Canal, with intermediate stops, in both directions, at San Juan, Long Beach, and Honolulu. Its approximate route starts at New York, then San Juan, Long Beach, Honolulu, Osaka, then back to New York. At each port of call, the vessel spends an entire day discharging and taking on containers. The vessel's time at sea between ports (in either direction) was NY-SJ = 2 DAYS, SJ-LB = 5 DAYS, LB-HO = 4 DAYS and HO-OS = 6 DAYS.THESE DAYS ARE IN ADDITION TO THE SINGLE DAY SPENT IN EACH PORT WHENEVER THE VESSEL STOPPED. The vessel made about nine (9) round trips per year, and it could carry 1,200 containers, either empty or full. The vessel's operating costs were $8,000 per day while sailing and $6,000 per day while at port. Its fixed costs were $10,000 per day. The vessel handled only containers, and the port terminal operator charged $100 for loading or unloading containers.(full or empty). Review the table of information below concerning containers, source, and destinations. The numbers reflect the number of full containers carried between the ports on its route, then answer the following questions. 1. How many containers does VB move?
