Objective: To learn how lenses make images and how pinhole patterns are formed. Materials: Light source, shape, lens, screen, bench with holders (Be very carerl with the lenses, they break easiliy.) Task 1: Properties of images Position the light source and shape at one end of the bench, mount the lens somewhere in the middle, and mount the xc screen at the other end of the bench. Move things around until you see a sharp image projected on the screen. Without moving anything, predict what would happen to the image on the screen if you were to move the screen farther from the lens? Would it get brighter/darker, bigger/smaller, will it become fuzzy or stay sharp? Settle this with your lab partners and write down the answer without trying it out! Now try it. What happened? Does an image exist all along the path of the light, or in one particular spot along the light path? Move things back so you see a sharp image projected on the screen again. Predict what would happen if you covered up the top half of the lens with a piece of paper? Would the image get brighter/darker, bigger/smaller, will it become fuzzy or stay sharp, would half of it go dark, and which halt? Settle this with your lab partners and write down the answer without Mpg it out! Now try it. What happened? Could you still get an image to form with a piece of a lens? (Don't try this!!!) Predict how you could rotate the image? By rotating the source? the lens? the screen? Now try it. Which ones rotate the image? Task 2: Pinhole investigation of light and lenses Prediction: What would happen to the image on the screen if you were to take away the lens altogether? Now try it. (Leave the screen where it is and mark the position of the lens for future tasks.) Is there still an image on the screen? Is there light on the screen? About light / Here is a picture of the light bulb. Draw lines -_- showing some of the paths that light rays take after being created at the circled region on the lament. Draw only rays that come -om the region. Now, draw lines showing some paths that light rays take aer being generated all over the hot lament. Make your drawing represent as many different possibilities as you can withOut losing legibility
