Answer the question below:
1: You have seen that acts of mass killing need to satisfy several criteria to be classified as genocide. Unless each of these criteria is met, cases of mass killing are very difficult to prosecute as cases of genocide. Genocide Watch has a page on genocide (http://genocidewatch.net/genocide-2/what-is-genocide) that provides a detailed discussion on what constitutes genocide. Discuss how at least one act of mass killing in the world (e.g., in Rwanda, in the former Yugoslavia) does or does not meet the legal standard of genocide as outlined by the criteria discussed by Genocide Watch.
2: We have provided several cases of genocide that have occurred in the 20th century. You can find more detailed information about these cases and others at the Amnesty International website (http://www.amnesty.org). You can also find information on genocides from other organizations, including the UN and Human Rights Watch. Conduct case studies of at least two cases of genocide that were alleged to have occurred after 1960. What are the factors that were present in the cases that were the precursors to the mass killings? How long did the killing go on before the international community introduced mechanisms to stop them? What policies could the international community have in place that would better be able to prevent such atrocities in the future?
3: In February 2007, the International Court of Justice of the United Nations acquitted Serbia of committing genocide in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the Balkan war of the 1990s but found it guilty of failing to prevent genocide in the massacre of more than 7,000 Bosnian Muslims in the town of Srebrenica. Go to the UN website (http://www.un.org) to find information about the case; you can search the site for genocide in general or for genocide in Bosnia in particular. What factors were instrumental in the court's decision? What factors were necessary for a guilty verdict according to international law?
