Acc 305: Advanced Accounting Information Systems Dr. Bob Hurt, C.F.E. Writing assignment directions As noted in the course syllabus, your writing assignment will focus on your work with SAP and its relationship to other topics we've discussed in Acc 305. The purpose of this handout is to explain the nature of the assignment and the criteria I'll use to evaluate it. Assignment description You'll be completing your writing assignment outside of class using Blackboard. Within the time window specified both in Blackboard and your syllabus, you'll log onto Blackboard and open the \"writing quiz.\" Blackboard will randomly select one of the following questions for your writing assignment: 1. Explain, using proper database terminology, why it is only necessary to enter journal entries into the SAP system and it is not necessary to do postings from the general journal to the general ledger. 2. The chart of accounts is many times described in financial accounting as the central element of a general ledger system. If the chart of accounts is represented with a table in SAP, what would be its primary key? Why? What other fields would the table include? Why? 3. Would an SAP user need to understand the rules of database normalization to use SAP? Why, or why not? Your job will be to respond to the assigned question in 200 - 300 words. You'll be able to use whatever books, notes and outside materials you'd like in responding to the question, but you will not be able to access such materials via the Internet. Practice assignment As you won't know until you log on to the writing quiz which of the questions Blackboard will choose for you, you may want to prepare for the quiz by responding to this practice question: During a job interview, the recruiter notes on your resume that you've done some work with SAP. The recruiter asks you how SAP is useful in accounting. Prepare a 100 - 200 word response for the recruiter. I'll be happy to review a rough draft of your response to the practice assignment, subject to the guidelines noted in your course syllabus. Evaluation I'll consider the following factors in evaluating your work: Does your response clearly and completely address the chosen question? Does your writing demonstrate a fundamental understanding of database concepts and their application in SAP? Does your response rely on your original thinking, rather than quotations and paraphrases? \"A\" papers will meet my expectations in all three evaluation areas. \"B\" papers will meet my expectations for two of the three areas. \"C\" papers will meet my expectations for one area only. Answers that fall into the following categories will not receive credit: They use English that would be considered unacceptable in the business world. They incorporate quotations and / or paraphrases. They do not conform to the length requirements specified above. They meet none of the three criteria. You must be present in class the day of the assignment to receive credit for your work. I encourage you to prepare and practice for this assignment, and look forward to seeing the results of your work.
