Summary of the Investigation:

Part 1 of the crime scene exercise will initially see the crime scene management students take on the role of first responding police officers at a crime scene and required to protect, preserve and secure the crime scene and the evidence within the scene. In assuming the roles of the first responding police officers to the 911 call you are not being asked to solve the crime as this is the role of the police detective.

Part 2 of this this exercise will have the students in the role of the forensic identification officer and students are introduced to the task of crime scene investigation. Students will learn and apply the various techniques used during a crime scene investigation, including what types of evidence to collect and how that evidence can be used to deduce information about the crime and/or the suspect involved in the crime.

In this exercise, students will learn such investigative strategies as measuring the scene, triangulation of such measurement and the chain of custody of evidence. This includes the detailed notetaking of blood and other DNA samples at the scene for the eventual collection of such evidence by forensic identification officers. It will subsequently be delivered to the Centre of Forensic Science to allow the applicable scientists to conduct a variety of biological testsincluding blood typing and DNA fingerprinting that can match a suspect to the crime.

Part 1: Learning Scenario to Kick Off the Exercise:

On Monday March 4th at 1:20 pm, you Police Constables Ryan Ford #9876 and Gail Owen #6789 of the Toronto Police, Primary Response Unit in 43 Division in the Scarborough area receive a radio call from the Communications Dispatcher to attend 941 Progress Avenue, Apartment D3-07 for the sounds of a disturbance coming from inside the apartment.

A neighbour in Apartment D3-08 reports that the apartment door was partially opened and he was able to see into the apartment where he observed a young man, (Robert Brown) who lives in Apartment D307 found dead at the kitchen table with a knife stuck in his neck and a second unknown male lying on the floor, also presumed to be dead with what appears to be a bullet into his forehead and there is blood everywhere in the apartment..

The officers are further advised the room was in a little bit of disarray, chairs turned over and desks shoved out of place.

At 1:30 pm, the officers arrive at the location and now observe the door to Apartment D307 is closed, you speak to a male who identifies himself as Gary Green and advises that he was the one who had discovered his neighbour dead and called 911. The neighbour appears to be shocked and is wondering what happened and why.

He reports they are both college students at Centennial College, but his neighbour is not very popular one at that! He had a history of trouble with teachers, administrators, and other studentsprobably with others as well and is known to the complainant as being a drug dealer of oxycontin out of his apartment, so the list of suspects might be very long. You ask the complainant to return to his apartment and wait for another officer to talk to him which he does.

Sergeant Michael Jones #3456 is now on scene with the officers, and the officers immediately open the unlocked door and scan the apartment for safety purposes. The officers determine both victims to be deceased. The officers protect, preserve, and secure the scene to allow the investigators the ability to solve the crime.

Sergeant Jones notifies the dispatcher to have the 43 CIB Detectives, Homicide Unit and Forensic Identification Unit attend to the scene.
