Try this for an irregularly shaped piece cut out from an illustration board. (Choose your own design or shape.) Mark the location of the point at which you balanced your object. Is there a more systematic way of finding the center of gravity of an irregularly shaped object? Try this. 1. Get some string and tie a bob or weight so that the string will hang vertically downward from a pin or thumbtack pinned near the edge of the board. Make sure the tack is loose enough so that the object can swing freely from side to side. 2. With a pencil, draw the line made by the string on the board once it stops swinging. 3. Change the position of the tack to another point, but near the edge of the object. Draw the line made by the string as it hangs downward. Mark the intersection of this line with the line of No. 2. 4.
