5. Ava produce has significant meaning in the Pacific Island countries and is used in cultural ceremonies as well as daily usage or consumption. As a result trade in Ava in the Pacific has been increasing every year. In 2018, Tonga has come to realize that imports of Ava from Fiji PNG and Vanuatu is severely affecting the Tongan local Ava farmers and producers. The Tonga Ministry of Trade has got statistics that show that Ava imports from Fiji account for 2.8%, PNG account for 2.5% and Vanuatu account for 2% of the total volume of imports in Tonga.
