Antonio is working with Dr. Baker on some research she is conducting looking into whether there is a relationship between a student's level of motivation and their personality. Antonio gives the survey to a group of student volunteers late Friday afternoon because that is the only time he could get a room to administer the survey. He must however, until Monday morning to gain access to Dr Baker's office to turn in the surveys. Antonio made sure that each student signed the consent form and then they filled out the survey. He collects the surveys with the consent forms attached to each and therefore, each student's name accompanies their own survey. Antonio places the pile of completed surveys and consent forms on his desk in his dorm room, so that he will remember to bring them to Dr. Baker first thing Monday morning.
Reflection Questions:
- Even though Antonio is just trying to be careful about keeping the surveys together and accurate, what is the potential problem with the way he has organized the stack of surveys? What are some ethical problems that might occur as a result?
- Do you think it was okay for Antonio to keep the surveys in a pile on his desk? What would be a better solution?
- One of the students that took the survey was a girl that Antonio has been infatuated with for the past two semesters. He has always wanted to ask her out but thought she might be out of his league. Would it be a serious ethical violation for Anotnio to take a peek at her survey to learn more about what she is like? Explain why or why not.
