The figure shows a cylinder with a frictionless piston containing water. The piston mass is such that 275kPa pressure is required to raise the piston against the ambient pressure outside. The mass of water is 20kg. Initially water is at 275kPa. The area of the piston is 0.0214m2. The height of the piston at this point is 20m and the piston touches the spring but exerts no force on it (State 1). The system is heated and the piston rises untilthe system reaches 250C. At this point, the total volume is 1m3. During this pfocess the resisting force of the spring is proportional to the distance moved. At this point the piston just reached the top stops and the spring is totally deflected (State 2). The system is heated until the pressure inside the cylinder is 5MPa (State 3). 3.1.
