From fraudulently dumping dangerous chemicals to producing Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) to boost harvests and profits, Monsanto (Bayer) has been in the hot seat when it comes to ethical dilemmas in recent years. It is important to note that Monsanto is confronted with two major ethical issues: Among the issues were: 1. damage to farmland and the environment, and a detrimental influence on traditional agricultural techniques; and 2. a lack of honesty and ethical transparency to satisfy the demands of all Stakeholders.
The first ethical issue are the concerns of damaging farmland, environment, and negatively affecting traditional farming practices. Recommend that Monsanto increase their community involvement like offering after school programs where students can learn about nutrition and gardening, sponsoring community gardens, or offering scholarships to improve their reputation and public. Another recommendation would be to improve Monsanto's reputation with the public and maybe take away some negative publicity. Performing a cultural audit by using a reputable consulting firm that is highly respected. I would promote and advertise that Monsanto would realign their exacting culture to a caring culture to demonstrate to all stakeholder that they high concern for people and the environment and not just profits. Implementing a good, regular and consistent communication and trainingprogram will help to embed an ethical caring culture.
The second ethical issue is the lack of honesty and ethical transparencies to meet the needs of all Stakeholders. The agency theory comes to play in this situation, principles over the agents. The corporation must accept responsibility for its previous errors and maintain an open and honest relationship with all stakeholders.Example would be apologizing for the damages to the environment and people that were caused by the PCBs and Agent Orange products. In addition, if they were a little more transparent with the general public and farmers about their mission, their science, and the real results they were generating I do not think these agents would see them as the villains. The company is simply trying to feed the greatest number of people and in a world where food is becoming scarce; wouldn't it be great to be able to maximizing and advancing all harvests.
Revamping their code of ethics policy and make ethical performance across all stakeholders a strategic priority. An applicable code of ethics, code of conduct, or similar policy that establishes clear goals, norms, and expectations is a critical necessity for ethical performance in the workplace. Their mission statement and fundamental principles must be redefined in light of a value-based ethics culture, rather than a compliance-based ethic culture, and they must do it quickly. The essential elements of a code includes assurances of support for the ethical policies from the principle and agent stakeholders. Develop clear processes for reporting suspected fraud and violation of company policies on ethical behaviors. Apply practical guidance on what is expected regarding ethical issues, commitments concerning stakeholder relationships, example Q&As, scenarios or decision trees, details of how the code of ethics will be implemented and monitored, and the consequences of misconduct. Too many organizations are weak in this regard and they must adopt a zero-tolerance approach.
Monsanto needs to improve their corporate social responsibility. This corporate social responsibility would go beyond economic and legal obligations and encourage them to contribute to society in a positive way. A new corporate social responsibility program would promote and disclosed trustworthy reporting systems that across the society and environment. In addition, I would advocate incorporating a teleological framework, namely a utilitarian approach, as a starting point.because it is easier to list out the logical outcomes than it is to identify and layout all of the business guiding principles to society. The ethical framework utilitarianism is the happiness for the greatest number of people, based on rational choice. By increasing public relations, improving their treatment of farmers, and educating the public, Monsanto would become more socially responsible and it would repair their reputation.
Monsanto would become more socially responsible and their image would be repaired if they improved their public relations, improved their treatment of farmers, and educated the public about their products. Monsanto needs to continue working with all stakeholders to promote its technological innovations and eliminate any fears concerning its industry.
