ARE MILLENNIALS MORE NARCISSISTIC?
Plus point Those who are in college today have many good qualities: they are more tech-knowledgeable, more socially tolerant, and more balanced in their jobs and family priorities than previous generations. Therefore, those about to enter today's workforce do so with some important virtues. Humility, however, is not one of them. A large-scale longitudinal study found that those graduating from college in 2010 were more likely than those of previous generations to have seemingly exaggerated views of themselves. 2010 graduates were more likely than 1980 graduates to be "very good" husbands, (56% of graduates in 2010 compared to 37% of graduates in 1980), better parents (54% of 2010 graduates, 36% of 1980 graduates, and better workers (65% of 2010 graduates) , 49% among 1980 graduates). Studies measuring narcissism suggest that outcomes are on the rise, especially among younger generations. For example, by presenting a choice between two statements, psychologists have found that narcissism has been growing since the early 1980s. A 2011 University of Kentucky study by researcher Dr. Nathan DeWall even found that folk songs are increasingly narcissistic. Analyzing the lyrics of the songs on the Billboard Hot 100 from 1980 to 2007, DeWall found a clear trend towards narcissism. The words "I" and "my" have replaced "we". Increased narcissism is all around us. The sooner we admit it, the sooner we can start to address the problem in the family, in education and at work.
Point against Speaking of music, this argument is like a scratched record that seems to play over and over again: "Today's young people are lost!" Each generation tends to think that the new generation has no values, and the new generation thinks that the older generation is hopelessly prejudiced and out of touch. Wasn't it the " generation of the self " supposedly a generation ago? Let's discard the scratched disc to the recycle bin and we'll review the evidence. A recent study that tracked nearly half a million young people on measures of selfish traits such as self-perceived intelligence, self-esteem and self-improvement found little evidence to suggest changes since the 1970s. In short, Millennials are no more narcissistic than the young people of the 1970s or 1980s. The authors of this study conclude: "Today's young people do not seem more selfish than previous generations ... In fact, today's young people seem to have psychological profiles that are very similar to the young people of the last 30 years." Another study offers an interesting explanation of why people think Millennials are more narcissistic. Specifically, young people in general are more self-centered, but as people age, they become more focused on "others." So we think young people are different when they're really just the way older people were when they were younger. As these authors conclude: "Each generation is Generation I." Our level of narcissism seems to be one of many things that change as we age. More generally, there are narcissistic people in every generation. We have to be careful when generalizing about whole groups (whether it's a sex, a race, a culture, or a generation). Although generalizations have not caused difficulty, we still like to simplify the world, sometimes rightly so. In this case, however, the reason is not there, especially considering the latest evidence.
