Arnav couldn't wait to attend football camp. He had been selected to join a special, two-week training session led by professional footballers from India and a few from other countries. Students Arnav's age -- all 17 and close to finishing secondary school -- had been chosen from across the country through a rigorous application process, which required try-outs and recommendations from coaches.

The camp was going to be held in February at a renowned football academy in Shillong. The institute had great facilities, comfortable accommodations, and the weather was perfect that time of year. It was going to be incredible, and possibly be Arnav's ticket to the successful football career he had always dreamed of.

Finally, camp was about to start. Arnav travelled with his father to Shillong, as the camp required at least one parent or guardian to attend the opening weekend, given that the students were still under the age of 18. His father had to sign a waiver that he would take any responsibility for injury that Arnav may suffer at the camp. Arnav and his father went to the family orientation, set up Arnav's room and met all the coaches. "Take care of my son!" Arnav's father said to them, with a sad expression, as his hopes of Arnav becoming a doctor seemed like more of a wish than a reality.

Then it was Monday morning; time for training to start! Arnav could not be more excited. He put on the new kit that the coaches had given him specially for this camp, complete with new boots. His shin guards didn't fit well, as they were digging into his calf muscles and caused some discomfort. He knew it was mandatory to wear them, though, so kept them on.

The first day was marvellous. The sun was shining, and it was slightly windy to keep the players cool. The training was tough, but the coaches were encouraging, and Arnav met a group of young footballers just like him who were as talented and excited as he was. The only problem was his shin guards: when training ended, he took them off and noticed he had painful bruising on the inside of his legs. The next morning, Arnav again contemplated not wearing them, but decided he should.

Training was equally good the next day, but the wind had picked up a little more, which was uncharacteristic for February. Arnav's main coach, Sanjay Chhetri, noticed that two of the goals were rattling when the wind blew, one of them rattling quite seriously. Chhetri stopped training for 30 minutes and sent two camp assistants to investigate both of them. After they looked at the goals, they returned to Coach Chhetri and told him that while the goals were old and had been on the pitch for a number of years, they were still in good condition and firmly rooted in the ground. Upon hearing this information, Coach Chhetri said the players should resume training, even though there was only an hour left in the day. The wind had died down a bit, and Coach Chhetri wanted to finish a few drills.

Arnav's calves were aching intensely at this point. Before returning to the field for the last hour of practice, Arnav took out his skin guards and slipped them into his bag. "One hour isn't so long," he thought to himself, "to go without shin guards. I'll risk it."

The players got back on the field. Arnav felt great. His legs weren't cramped by the ill-fitting shin guards, and he had a couple of impressive breakaways. For a third time, his friend Shashank crossed him the ball, and he ran toward the goal. He was going to score this time!

Arnav was in the box and just about to shoot when an enormously powerful gust of wind whipped across the field. Arnav heard a ripping sound, and as he was running, he looked up and saw the entire metal goal flying in the air toward him. He stopped abruptly, and the defender who was chasing him slammed into him from behind, flipping Arnav up in the air and completely around so that he was falling toward the ground face first. Before he landed, Arnav felt a searing punch to the back of his head, which was the metal goal hitting him. Arnav landed on top of the defender, so that the hard toe of the defender's boot caught Arnav in the shin. Arnav heard a crack, fell to the ground, and passed out.

Arnav woke in a hospital room with one parent standing on either side of him, each holding one hand. He tried to see their faces, but his vision was blurry. He also had a pounding headache. When he fully came to, he realized how nauseous he was. He looked at his father, who said: "You have a concussion, son. The goal post hit you pretty hard." Then he looked at his mother, who said: "And you broke your shin bone. Why didn't you have those shields on your legs?" Arnav said: "Shin guards, Mom. Shin guards."

"Whatever," Arnav's mom said. "The point is, you got severely hurt at this camp and we are going to hold them responsible for this!" Arnav's mother started visibly shaking and started sobbing. She let go of Arnav's hand and sat down in a chair in the hospital room. She looked at Arnav with a huge bandage on his head, purple stains building under his eyes, and his broken leg in traction. Then she cried uncontrollably so a nurse had to come in and escort her out of the room. Arnav's father told Arnav that his mother was very fragile, and she was physically ill when Coach Chhetri described his injuries over the phone to them.

At that point, Shashank and a few other players burst into the room to see how their friend Arnav was doing. Shashank breathlessly shared with Arnav and his father that the night before the accident, he had seen a few boys steal the screws from the bottom of the goal posts. Arnav's father was visibly irate at this news. "Your mother's right," he said to Arnav. "Someone shall be held responsible!"

Arnav's parents consult with an advocate to learn what claims, if any, they can bring and against whom. Identify and discuss those claims, as well as any defences or counterclaims can be raised against them.
