Arthur and his girlfriend Trillian go to Milliways, a local caf, for coffee. After entering the shop, Arthur agrees to order their drinks while Trillian goes to the toilet. Arthur orders two regular coffees, which Milliways serves in 340ml (12-fluid ounce) cups. Zaphod, who owns the caf, ran out of regular-size cup lids earlier that morning. To get around this problem, Zaphod squeezes lids designed for 285ml (10-fluid ounce) cups onto Arthur and Trillian's coffee cups. Arthur pays for the drinks and makes his way to a nearby table. As he sits down, the lids pop off the cups and their contents scald Arthur's hands and face. Arthur instinctively leaps out of his chair and falls backwards, banging his head on the edge of the table. Arthur, who has brittle bone disease, suffers a fractured skull. Before going to the toilet, Trillian hangs her bag on a hook near the entrance to the caf. While Trillian is using the toilet, Marvin, an opportunist thief, walks past Milliways and sees her belongings left unattended on the hook. Marvin steals Trillian's bag and runs away. Meanwhile, when Trillian tries to exit the toilet cubicle, she discovers that the lock is broken and that she cannot open the door. In her panic, Trillian attempts to climb out of the toilet cubicle but loses her grip and falls 10 feet (3 metres) to the floor, breaking her ankle. In considerable pain, Trillian hobbles out of the toilet. She is horrified to discover that her bag is missing and that Arthur is badly injured. Trillian finds Arthur on the floor, covered in blood and spilt coffee, with scalds and a serious head injury. Trillian's father, Ford, died in a road traffic collision five years ago and the sight of Arthur's condition brings back bad memories. In the weeks since the incident, Trillian has begun to feel low. Upon seeing Arthur and Trillian's injuries, Zaphod dialled 999. Bart, the call handler, dispatches the fire brigade instead of an ambulance, meaning that Arthur and Trillian are delayed in reaching the hospital. The evidence suggests that Trillian had a 35 per cent chance of making a full recovery at the time Zaphod rang the emergency services. As a result of Bart's mistake, that chance fell to 15 per cent and Trillian's injured leg is later amputated. Zaphod is upset about what happened at Milliways. He often affixes smaller lids to regular-size coffee cups without incident and says that other cafs do the same thing. Zaphod is proud of his caf: Milliways serves 'unashamedly hot' coffee brewed at 85 degrees Celsius (10 degrees hotter than the industry standard) and gives free drinks to homeless people. It has since come to light that Kappashire Police received an anonymous telephone tip-off that Marvin is the culprit behind several thefts from local shops. They failed to arrest him before he stole Trillian's bag because the police officer who took the telephone call wrote down the wrong address. Advise Arthur and Trillian as to any claims they may have in negligence according to the UK Tort Law with case study and other citations.
