AS a l"||l'll"lg manager I tl"|ll"|K OHE'S attitude outweighs OFIE'S SKlll set any day. What I mean DY that IS YOU can train and teach anyone to do just about anything. You can hardly ever truly change someone's attitude completely, but you can surround them with positive hard workers and try to. l have heard many times throughout the years that I have been working always hire a person for their character not just their skill set. Finding a balance between the two can be extremely tough because those who have years of experience don't always have the l'can do\" attitude they once had. I used to wonder how any entry level nurse with no experience landed a job when almost everyjob requires some experience. | dawned on me after an interview for the position I now hold. You must sell yourself and show that your attitude is incomparable to other candidates, you will usually learn everything you need to know on the job. There are a few ways I as a hiring manager would approach hiring a person with the right attitude and even the right talents. There is a chapter five strategy that I would use it is "Ask revealing questions" (Cockerell, 2008). By asking those unpredictable questions I can find out just who has that I1can do/willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done attitude\". While experience would always be a nice attribute to have. hiring someone who will work hard and go above and beyond for the patients is necessary in the nursing field. Chapter six has a ton of information as well, one thing I would implement would be " Become a COACH" (Cockerell,2008). Say I was facing a nursing shortage and desperately needed to fill spots but didn't have many experienced prospects, but they had great attitudes or vise versa I had many that has excellent experience but a not so great attitude. I would try to higher a balance of both. I would use strategies such as \"Become and COACH" and l'Teach by example" (Cockerell, 2003)- l1The acronym COACH- care, observe, act. communicate, help is a great way to train and develop an employee" (Cockerell, 2008}. Caring for employees by focusing on every single person individually this allows me to show them they are important and lets them what I am committed to and passionate about. Observing the workplace will tell me things that I need to improve; i.e. Do they have everything they need to perform their job effectively. I will need to act in a timely manner when items need to be addressed and corrected. Communication is key at every level; I will implement proper communication and draw the attentions of others to make sure lines of communication remain open and clear. Helping employees shows that I am there for them. I can implement this by helping others to become better by showing them and training them on how to complete tasks properly and that allows me to be clear about expectations (Cockerell, 2008). i also lead to teach/lead by example and practice exactly what I preach so I stay credible in my employees' eyes. I think Cockerell made such a great point in a previous chapter when he stated, "Make people your brand/build your culture" (Cockerell, 2008). It is important to hire the best candidate with the best can do attitude and not let them slip away form the organization. Just as important as it is to train the people that we hire to resonate the values and mission of that organization
