As a result of a review conducted by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), the Australian government is cracking down on vaping (the use of e-cigarettes or other devices that let people breathe in nicotine or other drugs as vapour rather than smoke). Mark Butler (Minister for Health and Aged Care) said vaping posed significant health risks that needed to be addressed, particularly among adolescents and young adults. In the last week of June 2023, several young people presented to hospitals with acute vaping-related illnesses from products purchased on the social media app Snapchat.

Health experts argue that "vapes (with and without nicotine) may contain dangerous chemicals, including those found in weedkiller and nail polish remover, which can cause irreversible damage. Vapes also have improperly labelled ingredients, including nicotine in non-nicotine vapes and 31 per cent of registered products have prohibited ingredients in concentrations exceeding the legal limit. This however does not deter the young generation, as some studies show that adolescents report that vaping helps them relax/cope, they enjoy vaping with others, and they choose vaping products based on flavours, social norms and because it is perceived as less harmful than tobacco cigarettes. Those studies also show that among young people, many who take up vaping have never regularly smoked but are eventually more likely to be heavily dependent on vaping with nicotine.

Health experts are urging parents to have early conversations to help discourage the adoption of vaping. They also highly condemn the colourful way that e-cigarettes are marketed and believe that companies are pushing poison on young people and getting them in through slick marketing.

Question:

a). How does the marketing of e-cigarettes raise a social dilemma?

b). What strategies would you recommend people to implement for them to resist the marketing of e-cigarettes?
