As employing physical force to discipline children can have negative effects on their health and growth, both physically and mentally, it is clear that this is not an effective method of parenting. For this reason, social welfare norms place a premium on disciplinary practices that are respectful, empathetic, and in the child's best interests, but which do not resort to violence.
