One way to capitalize on these relationships is to have a firm grasp of different personality Types and the varying motivations that manifest themselves in personal relationships. Through utilizing the wisdom of the Enneagram, in this problem you will gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of different personality Type characteristics and the importance of maximizing an EQ relational leadership approach in your interactions with others.

Description

The purpose of mind mapping is to give you the opportunity to (a) learn the material; (b) consider the multiple connections between the posed central question and the material; and (c) give you creative liberty to express yourself and your learning as you make a useful tool to capture your rich thinking. At the end of this course you will have created 9 different Mind Maps, one for each Enneagram Type, that you will be able to reference as you lead yourself and others toward Emotionally Intelligent Relational Leadership. These mind maps are all about making desired EQ pathway connections between you as a leader in YOUR TYPE and others in THEIR TYPE.

The EQ Relational Leadership Mind Maps will give you the opportunity to dive deeper into the Enneagram personality Types during Weeks 1- 5 (Gut Triad: Learn Week 2, Mind Map due on Week 3; Heart Triad: Learn Week 3, Mind Map due on Week 4; and Head Triad: Learn Week 4, Mind Map due on Week 5). You'll learn how to leverage Enneagram wisdom toward the Social Awareness EQ elements of Motivation and Empathy, and the Relationship Management EQ element of Social Skills. You'll be engaged in the writings of Carver & Green and Chestnut tomake EQ Relational Mind Maps to enhance your learning. The goal is to create a visual representation that will help you better understand the characteristics and motivation of each Type, contemplate how this understanding informs your empathy, and increase your social skills when leading or working with this Type of personality.

As outlined in the course schedule, you will make 3 separate Mind Maps for each assigned Enneagram Type Triad over the course of two weeks. As you set up your Mind Maps, you are encouraged to engage with them frequently to add more of your own learning (you are advised to use the entire two weeks to work on the Mind Maps). In other words, when you learn something new about that Type that you want to capture and connect, add to your Mind Map. Consider it a living and breathing document and give it all the life you can! Investing in your learning this way will enhance the desired learning outcome for this exercise: increased Social Awareness motivation and empathy skills and enhanced Relationship Management social skills.

The measurable criteria for these Mind Maps can be found in the Mind Map rubric. As you approach your Mind Maps, here are some things to consider:

  • Utilizing Mind Meister www.mindmeister.comLinks to an external site., and the assigned chapters in the Carver & Green and Chestnut books, make a Mind Map for each assigned Enneagram Type.
  • Work through each assigned chapter of the Carver & Green and Chestnut books, paying particular attention to the headings in the chapters to guide your Mind Maps, and use the guided questions below to spur your thinking.
  • There is no right or wrong way to approach your Mind Maps. YOU have the freedom to make and make connections to your learning in ways that make sense to you. The important thing is that you keep the Central Question in the middle of your Mind Map and then build it out from there (as you learned from the videos on Mind Mapping).
  • Your thinking about these Mind Maps should be based on the following premise: Keeping in mind the characteristics of YOUR own leadership Type, how you will leverage your leadership style with the Enneagram characteristics of a Type (fill in the blank) person. For example you might ask yourself, "As a Type 5 leader and based on what I've learned about the Enneagram characteristics of MY Type, how does my personality interact in my leadership with the personality of a Type 1 person and how does their personality interact with my personality Type? How will I enhance my Social Awareness Motivation and Empathy Skills, and my Relationship Management Social Skills with this person and them with me? How will I bring out the best of myself and the best of this person?" The goal of these Mind Maps is to equip you to think about and work through pathways of understanding of how you IN your Type can better engage with others IN their Type based on what we know from Enneagram wisdom. It's important that you make connections with your understanding of these Types in relationships. These maps are all about building relational bridges!!
  • The Central Question for these Mind Maps is: "What are the Characteristics, Perspectives, and Motivations of a Type _____Person and How Will I, as a Type ___ Leader Leverage my Relationship with Type ___ Persons?"
  • Be sure to type this question, along with the Type you are working on, in the center of your Mind Map. Then build on it from there. As noted in the rationale for this problem
  • you will want to make your mind maps with these different types of relationships in mind: leader-to-leader, leader-to-follower, follower-to-follower, and follower-to-leader.
  • You are encouraged to utilize words and images to enhance your understanding. You can even add links to videos if that will help your learning.
  • Be sure to capture all you want to know in your Mind Maps. Here are some questions to guide your thinking, but remember, YOU get the creative liberty to build your Mind Maps for your own learning.

  4. What does the Shadow Side look like: What are the weaknesses of the type?
  5. What is the impact of the Integration and Disintegration of this type (including Warning Signs)?
  6. What is the helpful language of this type and what can we learn from it?

Empathy (sensing others emotions, understanding their perspective). Some questions to consider for your Mind Map:

  1. How do Subtypes, Wings, Triads, and Stances help us to better understand the emotions and perspectives of this type?
  2. If You Love a : What do you need to keep in mind as you lead them?
  3. Unlearn the Nesting Lies: What are these lies and why do they matter?
  4. Ripple Effects: What are the ripple effects of this type on others?
  5. Self-Care: How can you help this type to develop healthy practices?

EQ RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT QUESTIONS (for the Chestnut text)

* An important note about the Chestnut book: While you will be laser focused on the chapter specific to your own leadership Type, it will be helpful for you to read about the leadership styles of the other Types so you can consider how other Types lead and incorporate that wisdom into your Mind Maps.

As you think about the characteristics of YOUR Enneagram Type in your leadership style, it will help you to thoroughly read through the chapter on your Type in the Chestnut book. Some questions to consider about YOUR leadership Type are:

  1. How would you describe your leader Type?
  2. What is the Central Adaptive Strategy of your personality style?
  3. What does this Type of leader pay attention to?
  4. How does this Type of leader see the world?
  5. What are the core characteristics of this Type of leader?
  6. What are the Mental, Emotional, and Behavioral patterns of this Type of leader?
  7. What are the Main Strengths and Superpowers of this Type of leader?
  8. When does too much of a good thing become a bad thing for this Type of leader?
  9. What do the "Low Side" and "High Sides" of this Type of leader look like?
  10. What do the 3 kinds of leaders of this Type look like?
  11. What does this Type of leader look like at work and what can they do to be easier to work with?
  12. What are the typical behaviors of this Type of leader in the workplace and why should that matter to followers?
  13. What's great about working with conscious leaders of this Type and how can followers leverage these characteristics in their relationship with this Type of leader?
  14. What are the typical challenges for people who work with this Type of leader and what can followers do to navigate these challenges?

THEN, once you've thought through the above questions, and integrated your thinking into your Mind Map, make connections on your Mind Map based on YOUR TYPE and the OTHER TYPE in relationship. Here are some questions to consider for this part of your Mind Map. Keep in mind the various relationships that may or may not differ in how you approach them (leader-to-leader, leader-to-follower, follower-to-follower, and follower-to-leader).

  5. What do I need to be looking out for as I better understand my motivations in my Type and my others' motivations in their Type?
  6. How can I better empathize with others in their Type?
  7. How can I build relational bridges with this Type?
