As teachers, we encounter many sensitive issues with our students over the years. We may be the first
to notice that a student needs help with health and safety issues (e.g., homelessness, drug addiction,
domestic violence).
Although we are not trained school counselors, or school nurses, we have to have a plan in place to
guide students to the appropriate resources. You will receive a lot of on-the-job training about policies
and procedures to abide by at your school on these types of situations.
Imagine for a moment a student is showing warning signs associated with disordered eating. You will be
asked on the quiz to state at least three of the warning signs for anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating. After
that, you will be asked to outline the first three steps you would take in order to guide this student to
the appropriate resources.
