As you learned from Chapter 1, managers perform certain activities, tasks, or functions as they direct and oversee others' work. This approach was first proposed by French Industrialist Henri Fayol. He said managers engaged in five management activities: plan, organize, command, coordinate, and control (POCCC). His choice of these five functions was based on his own observations of the mining industry, not from a formal survey. Today, those management functions have been condensed to the following four: 1 Planning includes defining goals, establishing strategy, and developing plans to coordinate activities. 2 Organizing includes determining which tasks need to be done and by whom, how tasks are to be grouped, who reports to whom, and who will make decisions. 3 Leading includes motivating employees, selecting the most effective communication channel, and resolving conflicts. 4 Controlling includes monitoring performance, comparing it with goals, and correcting any significant deviations. For this assignment, focus on the first three concepts of Planning, Organizing and Leading. How will you use this concept for the spring semester? Please write IN DETAIL your plan for the spring semester incorporating Management 1 and your other course work to succeed in all of your classes this semester. For planning, what goals you will accomplish to being successful? How will you organize yourself to accomplish your plan? How will you lead yourself internally through motivation, and plan for conflicts? REMEMBER: It is easy to write something down, to turn in an assignment; however, a strong leader, and a successful manager, will take time to think deeply before composing a successful plan through careful organization and leading, whether it be for themselves or someone else. Take the time to strengthen your skills for future action plans. This should be submitted as a typed proper assignment, and you should have one-two strong paragraphs for each of the four sections. Each paragraph should have no less than six sentence, as details are important. If you write, your plan is "to earn an A", that is a statement. If you write "to earn an A and study," that says more, but not enough, a strong manager will expand, HOW will you study, setting aside time, how much time? Organizing between three classes? What will the structure be. The more you write, the more the reader understands, and you can use this assignment as the foundation for the rest of the semester and abide by it!
