As your book discusses, definitions are an important part of the technical and professional world. You might find that you need to include parenthetical or one-sentence definition in your communications with clients or coworkers to make sure they understand your argument or explanation. You might be expected to define a product or service that your company provides in a document that you provide to a client. You might find that you read definitions that Human Resources provides to you that explain what medical benefits they cover for their employees. In short, definitions are part of the daily workplace.
For this tsak, you will writean extended definition, approximately300-400words long. You will need to follow the principles in your book, including rules for avoiding circular definitions and for avoiding when/where phrases. You'll need to start with a clear one-sentence definition that places your term in a general class and then differentiates that term from other items in that class. Then you'll pick a few strategies from the list in your textbook, based on whichworks best for your term. For example, you might use principle of operation, negation, and an image, while another student might use etymology, comparison, negation, and partition. I expect you to useat least 2separate strategies and toorganize the definition so that the most helpful or useful strategies appear first.
You will need to pick a term related to your field/career/major. This term should be technical enough that at least 50% of people who are not studying that field would not understand the term.Teach me something! It should maybe be a word that you yourself did not understand before you started studying this field.
Required
Please propose the term you would like to define for your extended definition.
1. What is the term you want to define?
2. How is it related to your major/career?
3. What strategies (methods) will you use in the definition (etymology, partition, negation, etc)?
Please keep in mind that you should pick a word that is not common knowledge to people who are not in your field. For example, if I am in IT, I would not define a program or a virus. Most people, even non-IT majors, know what those terms mean (and, yes, you could argue that they don't really know what it means--but I want you to pick a word that is totally new to most people). An essential part of this assignment is taking a word that is hard to understand and explaining it an easy-to-understand way. If the word is well-known, it's hard to really test if you are doing that effectively.
I will approve terms for the definition assignment.
