A systems engineer friend of mine who worked at a large military contractor in my town could never tell me much about "what" he made or "how" he made it, but we would often have philosophical discussions about "why." Ever since his early graduate school days, he was trained to ask questions that enable him to solve problems such as how will I create a solution? What technology will I use? How can it be optimized? It was as if he was deprogrammed from asking "why," so he particularly liked talking with me, the ethical philosopher. Why is his company funding war? Why is he creating this? Why can't he share his work with his friends and family? Why is his bonus structure dependent on several trips overseas? This leads me to ask you, fine folks, when should we ask why? What purpose does asking why serve within the context of ethical engineering? Within the context of the materials listed for module 10, what do you believe are the most important features involved in the future of engineering? Do you believe engineers should enter public discussions about technological developments, especially if they are responsible for their development? Under what circumstances might it be (or not be) morally desirable for them to contribute to these discussions
