*Selected Mutism: A story from "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings' by Maya Angelou. When Maya Angelou was a child living in Chicago with her mother, her mother's boyfriend raped Maya. There was a trial , he was found guilty and sent to prison. He escaped and was then murdered. Maya and her brother were sent to live with their grandmother in the country. Maya had stopped speaking. The reason was that in the trail she was asked if she had ever let the boyfriend touch her (the perpetrator was saying it wasn't rape). She said that she had not. However, she had let him give her back rubs. When he was murdered, she thought it was her fault because she had not spoken the truth. She had not wanted to be raped but she had let him touch her. Living in the country there was a woman who lived near her grandmother, she taught Maya and her brother and was very kind and Maya did begin to speak again.
I have begun the anxiety decision tree and you get to finish it. There is not just one way to complete this. Do it in a way that makes sense to you. The diagnoses not yet included are: Separation Anxiety Disorder, Specific Phobia, Social Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, Agoraphobia, Substance/Medication Induced Anxiety Disorder, and Anxiety Disorder Due to Another Medical Condition. Obviously you will have to extend the decision tree or make a new one.

She also volunteered at the local hospital. Jenny decided that she wanted to go to college in an urban area. She thought going to school in New York City would be exciting and she could go to the theater and see profession plays and musicals. She applied to Marymount Manhattan College and was asked to come for an interview. Her parents went with her and all agreed it was a good school for her. She was able to get some scholarship money and with just a small loan her parents could cover the rest. Everything was planned, Jenny had been texting with her roommate and they seemed to be a good match. She was registered for classes and looking forward to beginning this part of her life. Over the summer Jenny and her mother took a trip to New York and Jenny learned her way around and was very excited. Three weeks before Jenny was to leave she felt severe pain in her chest.
