Catherine's Catering is a small business that caters meals, receptions, and banquets for business and social occasions such as luncheons and weddings. It was inspired by Catherine's love of cooking and her talent for preparing fine meals. At first it was a small company with a handful of emplo projects. Catherine decided to hire an IT and business consulting company to help her address the problems her catering enterprise is facing. She has a budget of $50,000 and would like to have a svstem built to address the many issues very particular about cost and time constraints. She wants schedule visibility and is interested in getting the main functionalities built before anything else. She wants the development team to work closely with her and make sure that they are getting the requirements right. A failed system is not an option for her After performing interviews and observing the number of key staff, the consultants identified several concerns. They found that the master chef ordered supplies (produce, meat, etc.) from suppliers for each event. The suppliers would provide discounts if greater quantities were ordered at a single time for all events in a given time frame (though delivery could be taken closer to the event date). On taking a look at the last year's orders the suppliers said that bulk orders could have saved Catherine around S5000. Also, customers often called to change the number of guests for an event, with some changes made only one or two days before the event was scheduled. Further, it was too time consuming for Catherine and her staff to handle each request for catering, with about 60% of the calls resulting in a contract. Attending to these calls was taking 50% of Catherine's time. While Catherine values the direct contact with the customers she realized that more than half the time in the customer conversation was being spent on routine questions with standardized answers. Furthermore, conflicts in schedules were occurring and some events were understaffed. Complaints about the timeliness of service were becoming more frequent. Also, Catherine does not have any summary information about the number of events and types meals. It would be helpful to have trend information that would help her guide her customers in their choice of meals. Catherine hires someone at the end of each year to create summary reports for her business and would pay $1500 for the assistance. Finally, the consultants found that the events are often held at hotels or other meeting halls, which provide table settings for sit-down meals. The first five weeks were spent on the construction of the process models. On its completion they started developing decision trees. Two more week's worth of work is still pending on this activity. On completing the construction of the decision trees, the next 10 weeks will be spent on revising the decision trees. On completing the construction of the process models, work will immediately start on organizing the data dictionary. This activity has been assigned 7 weeks. Two weeks have been assigned for constructing output prototype. Since, this is an independent piece of work, this was completed at the beginning of the systems development process. On completion of the output prototype, work on revising the output design was also started This process requires a total of 9 weeks. The team is also working on writing use cases from the beginning of the systems development process. This activity was estimated to take 10 weeks in total. On completion of the use cases, data dictionary and revision of the output design, the database design activity can start. This activity is estimated to take 8 weeks. The last activity would be to write up the project. This would take 4 weeks and is dependent on the completion of the database design and revision of the decision tree. a.
