Assignment #2
This assignment asks the concepts of statistical testing, null hypothesis, and t-tests as an example of statistical hypothesis testing. Answer the following sub-questions. Type your answer in this Word file and upload it on Canvas.
2. Consider the following situation where a local fitness center wants to determine the circuit training room's fate. Read the case below and develop the null and alternative hypotheses. (10 points)
Recently, Avery Fitness Center (AFC) was interested in verifying those who used circuit training visited the fitness center more often than those who didn't. The fitness center has gathered data concerning whether each member of the center used circuit training in the previous month and how many times each member visited the center. You can find the data in the SPSS data file AFC.sav.
Here is the description of the variables in the data file.
member: member unique ID
circuit: 1 if the member used circuit training last month, 0 otherwise.
visit:the number of visits of the member in the previous month.
3. What is the most appropriate statistical methods to test the null and alternative hypotheses that you developed in Q2) (5 points)?
a.Independent sample t-test with equal variance
b.Independent sample t-test with unequal variance
c.Paired sample t-test
d.Chi-square goodness-of-fit test
e.Chi-square test of independence
4. Conduct the t-test you suggested in Q3) using SPSS, copy and paste the SPSS output, and interpret the result. Should AFC reject the null hypothesis you build in Q2? (15 points)
5. What does the test result mean to AFC? If AFC will determine the circuit training room's fate based on the number of member visits, does the test result tell AFC should keep the circuit training room? (15 points)
