Assignment 4: Measurement System Design: Performance Matrix Once we have determined measures and measurement systems for each of our pinpoints, we can use the data and goals we received from the client (Assignment 3A: Ding Dong's Baseline Data and Goals) to design a Performance Matrix to track performance on each pinpoint as well as server performance as a whole. NOTE: One of the WWC senior consultants has rightly pointed out that the Reinforcement Plan should be determined AFTER we have finished our analyses and determined the most appropriate solutions. That will allow us to align those solutions with the Performance Matrix. Therefore, we will only be creating the Matrix itself for this assignment, not the Reinforcement Plan. Follow these steps to complete the Performance Matrix. 1. Enter the pinpoints in the Pinpoint Column. Use a shortened pinpoint description where necessary. 2. Enter the baseline data for each pinpoint into the Baseline Column. 3. Enter the goal level for each pinpoint into the Goal Column. 4. Enter subgoals (6-9) for each pinpoint, as appropriate. You can add as many (all four) or as few (only one) subgoals as you want. Use the following guidelines to help you determine your subgoal needs: a. Include subgoals when baseline is a long way from goal level. b. Include subgoals when it is difficult to improve performance. c. Include subgoals when there are few opportunities to improve performance significantly. 5. If performance could drop below baseline levels and still be considered acceptable, add the minimum acceptable performance under Column 4. 6. If performance could improve beyond goal level, consider adding overachievement goals to allow performers to earn even more points (and to encourage discretionary effort). 7. Give each pinpoint a weighting based on criticality of the pinpoint to job and organizational performance; the total weightings must add up to 100. The senior consultant has entered the pinpoints and completely filled out the first pinpoint. The senior consultant also completed steps 1-4 for the second pinpoint, and steps 1-3 for the third pinpoint. Use the senior consultant's answers as a model to complete each of the remaining rows of the Performance Matrix. After you submit your Performance Matrix, the client will use it to collect additional baseline data on each of the pinpoints. The additional data will be useful for our performance and contingency analyses (Assignments 5-10). ADDITIONAL NOTE: Given that we only have four pinpoints, Ding Dong's could eventually decide to add more performances (we recommend adding a maximum of 1-3 more) to the matrix to get a better picture of overall server performance. They would just need to go through the same process we did to (a) determine pinpoints, (b) determine measures and measurement systems for each pinpoint, and (c) collect baseline data and set goal levels.
