A New Ventilation System for Sidelines Sports Bar & Grill

Sidelines Bar and Grill is a chain of six popular sports bar and grills

located in counties surrounding the metro Atlanta area. One Sidelines location has seen a significant decrease in revenue due to a local non-smoking ordinance that was recently passed.

The ordinance states that all retail establishments within the city limits must be smoke free unless an age limit of 18 years or older is enforced. Sidelines is one of five other local businesses that have decided to adhere to the age limit.

There are several advanced air purification systems on the market that will remove 99.9% of harmful smoke from the air, purify it, and return it to the building. No restaurant in town has yet installed such a system, but the city will allow patrons of any age if one of those advanced air purification systems is installed.

Because of the new ordinance, Sidelines has lost a significant portion of regular business, which consisted of mostly families. Additionally, now more smokers have been attracted to the location. The affected Sidelines location has become dangerously smoky which has dampened its marketability. The current smoke ventilation system is incredibly old and ineffective. Other municipalities in the metro area are expected to adopt the same ordinance in the near future. If so, most, if not all of the Sidelines locations, could see a significant drop in revenue as well. In order to stay competitive in the industry, Sidelines needs to keep the non-smoking patrons, but the overwhelming smoke is driving off the families. You believe Sidelines needs to update the ventilation system to ensure that all of the customers are able to enjoy themselves at the restaurant, including families with younger children.

You are the manager of the affected Sidelines location and believe that updating the smoke ventilation system would make the environment more enjoyable for everyone. You believe that once the advanced smoke ventilation system is installed, there will be a significant increase in revenue just from the new non-smokers and families. You believe the increased and recovered business would cover more than just the costs of the new unit and add to profits.

You have received approval from Mr. Ervin Sideline, the CEO of Sidelines Sports Bar and Grill, to conduct further research, develop financial pro-forma, and make an oral presentation to Mr. Sideline and his executive committee.
