Answer the following questions, showing your rough work calculations using either text entry or attaching a picture or document.

1. The City of Hamilton is considering adding a new interchange on the LINC (Design Speed = 100 km/h) at Upper Ottawa Street. Calculate the free-flow speed for a short section of the 4 lane freeway for the westbound direction with lane widths of 3.4m and 0 m of lateral shoulder clearance. The existing ramp density will increase to 9 ramps within 10 kms. (4 marks)

2. In the example above, the additional ramp would increase the downstream capacity to 4500 vehicles in the eastbound direction. Would this density be acceptable based on the new Free Flow Speed? (2 marks)

3. Calculate the downsteam capacity, metering rate (vehicles per second), cycle length and green interval for a six lane freeway that has a capacity of 2300 vehicles per hour per lane. The upstream traffic volume is 6275 vehicles, and the municipality would prefer one vehicle to enter at a time during the green indication and that the red interval be 4 seconds between vehicles (4 marks-show your work)

4. Calculate the downsteam capacity, metering rate (vehicles per minute), cycle length and red interval for a four lane freeway that has a capacity of 2300 vehicles per hour per lane. The upstream traffic volume is 3700 vehicles, and the municipality would prefer two vehicles to enter at a time during the green indication, with each vehicle receiving 1.5 seconds of green time (7 marks-show your work)

5. What issues would you anticipate if the Ministry of Transportation was considering reducing congestion along the eastbound Highway 403 through Hamilton (true northbound) and approached the City of Hamilton about installing ramp metering signals on the westbound Lincoln Alexander Parkway ramp that enters the Highway 403 Eastbound (true Northbound)?
