Assignment 8 Overview: You will renovate a chain of coffee houses/bookstores to include internet hookups plus completely modernize the coffee houses and regional offices. Here is background information necessary to complete the project. This includes a history of the business, and a description of the problems that triggered this project. In 1987 Bert Roads owned and operated a coffee house. The coffee house was a popular meeting place for the local people, and Bert Roads seeing an opportunity to carn some additional income, allowed a local bookstore to place a books in one corner of his building. The operator and Mr. Roads agreed to evenly split the revenue generated by the sale of books. When the bookstore owner decided to retire, Mr. Roads purchased the local bookstore, which he converted into a bookstore/coffee house. Mr. Roads new business blossomed. All the profits earned were re-invested into the business to buy more places for his coffee houses/book stores. Mr. Roads now has recently acquired another small chain of coffee houses, which now brings the total number of coffee shops to 14 scattered throughout the South East. Now he would like to renovate these shops to include wireless internet hookups, outlets for laptops and installing several PC's in each store. There is talk of purchasing a similar chain of stores in Maryland. Roads Coffee Services has grown to be one of the better operations of this type in the South East. Headquartered in Atlanta, GA, the company recently, by acquisition, has a regional office in Jacksonville, Florida. They employ 15 employees per store and have staff in Atlanta and Jacksonville. Your job will be to renovate the stores to include these new facilities. Since each store is unique it will require the services of an architect to design the renovation, plus companies that will do the renovation. The data processing facilities at Roads Coffee Services are very limited, and Mr. Roads feels everything will to need to be replaced as all the equipment is obsolete. During this renovation Mr. Roads wishes to have the main and regional offices data processing facilities completely modernized. The Problem Roads Coffee Services currently has no automated system to manage its inventory as well as tracking the revenue performance of each individual business location. Because of this inadequate system, Mr. Roads cannot effectively make management decisions. With the addition of the internet; machines, and hookups; he needs to know: when to order new machines when and how to upgrade and service existing machines when to replace outdated machines with new ones Also, Mr. Roads needs to know information about his current inventory such as, coffee supplies; books availability and location: location, quantity and type laptops and PC's in service; the maintenance of cach; the installation history of each piece of equipment as well as the business location. Mr. Roads believes he is not effectively utilizing his resources and thus losing considerable amounts of money, because he cannot effectively plan and make decisions. This is because he can't get the data he needs or he has very little confidence in the data he has. Asset data needs to be available in real-time and presented in a user-friendly environment, in order for Roads Coffee Services to respond to customer (business location) inquiries in a timely fashion. In the past, it has taken hours, even days, to respond to customer book inquiries. Also Roads Coffee Services would like to be in a position to expand this business and acquire other companies while still using the new Computer Systems put into place during this system update. Mr. Roads would like to be able in the future to have an online catalog system so present and uture customers may view all the books and the type of software available in each individual store. Mr. Roads feels he needs in addition to the renovation of all stores a complete new data processing system in his business offices, Your assignment will be to plan all renovations to the coffee houses including acquiring the necessary furniture for the renovated area. They will be responsible for purchasing and installing hardware in both the coffee houses and the offices, for the software development, design and testing, and implementation of all the systems used in the offices and the coffee houses and training employees in its use. They will also develop advertising for each refurnished coffee shop as a grand opening. The coffee houses will be renovated at the rate of at least 2 a month. The Project will be designed in phases or tasks with the first phase or summary task ready for implementation as soon as possible, and subsequent phases ready for completion every 2 to 5 weeks. General Requirements: There will be a minimum of eight (8) summary tasks or phases with each containing a minimum of four (4) detail tasks. At least four (4) milestone tasks will be defined. At least twenty (20) of the detail tasks must be linked to other tasks. At least two (2) summary tasks must be linked. At least six (6) resources will be used. Remember these are the very minimum and I imagine you will need many more.
