Assignment Learning Outcomes
After completing this assignment, students in this course should be able to:
- Write learning outcomes for T&D programs.
Step 1 - Draft the Outcomes
Start by brainstorming some of the things you want trainees to know and/or be able to do after they complete your training program. You can also review your needs assessment data and identify the training topics that your classmates rated as most important or most frequently used.
Then, transform your initial ideas into five learning outcomes using the ABCD acronym shown below.
Audience - Who are the trainees?
Behavior - What do you expect them to do?
Conditions - Under what conditions are they expected to do this?
Degree - What is the expected performance level?
Step 2 - Choose Assessment Methods
Once you identify learning outcomes, you can choose assessment methods that will help you determine whether training achieved the outcomes. Some methods produce quantitative data in the form of numbers, while other methods result in qualitative data in the form of words.
Direct assessment methods collect evidence of learning directly from trainees and their performance on some measure. Indirect assessment methods collect information from all stakeholders and infer, rather than observe, whether learning occurred. Review the examples of direct and indirect assessment methods in the table below.

Step 3 - Evaluate the Outcomes
Evaluate the quality of the outcome using the checklist below. You do not need to submit your answers to these questions; simply use them to improve your learning outcomes.
- Did you write learning outcomes or learning objectives?
- Did you include action verbs from Blooms taxonomy or a vague verb like learn, know, or use?
- Is each statement clear and concise, or complex and wordy?
- Are there multiple outcomes in a single statement? If you see the word and, it may be a clue.
- Is each outcome specific?
- Is each outcome realistic?
- What is needed to ensure the program achieves the outcome?
- How will you know if the program achieves the outcome? What assessment method(s) will you use?
- How does the outcome support the companys business strategy?
Step 4 - Revise the Outcomes Using Template
Based on your answers to the brainstorming questions above, revise the five learning outcomes and submit the text here; you do not need to submit a document. Note that you will use the feedback you receive from the instructor to update these outcomes before inserting them into your training project design proposal.
Make sure you use the template below:
- "After completing this training program, students should be able to:
- Behavior (and degree) 1,
- Behavior (and degree) 2,
- Behavior (and degree) 3,
- Behavior (and degree) 4, and
- Behavior (and degree) 5.
