ASSIGNMENT Our legal topic this week is democracy and the threats to maintain our freedoms. I think it is important to understand what the founding fathers envisioned for this country, in order to understand where we are today and the threats we face as a country. Let's start by looking at the definition. What is democracy? 1. A government by the people especially, rule of the majority. 2. A government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections. As I look at the definition, it appears loaded with so many concepts. Having a democracy means that our government works for us. We pay their salaries and we finance the government through our taxes. It also says that democracy is a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people. These are the ideals upon which our government was formed through the constitution. What happens when our elected representatives no longer represent our ideas? What happens when a majority of the people no longer rule or dictate what happens in our democracy? What happens when the minority of the people of America become the people vested with the supreme power while the majority of the people are sidelined through systems that are discriminatory and oppressive? What happens when foreign countries use propaganda on social media to sway our elections? What happens to "The People" when businesses finance political campaigns to elect politicians who will reward them with favorable laws? These are concepts to ponder as we answer the questions for this week's discussion. Please answer the following questions: 1. What does democracy mean to you? 2. What would our society look like if we were no longer a democracy? Describe what your freedoms would look like. 3. Do you think that our democracy is threatened when foreign countries interfere with our democratic process of elections? Please explain how. 4. How do you think we should respond to foreign countries interfering in our democratic elections? Please provide substantial responses to the threat
