- Review information regarding formal analysis in Module 3.
- Choose two prints from different printmaking processes that you would like to analyze.
- You may choose the prints from your textbook or the Internet. The Metropolitan Museum of Art'sWhat is Printmaking?(https://www.metmuseum.org/about-the-met/collection-areas/drawings-and-prints/materials-and-techniques/printmaking) link has many prints from which to choose below their Highlights from the Collection section at the bottom of the page for each process.
- Note that prints are not paintings, drawings, or sculptures.
- Writea description of the processes and doa formal (visual) analysis of the prints, following the instructions below.
Topic Instructions and Questions:
You should write(at least) two paragraphs per print. Since you will be discussing two prints, this will total (at least) four paragraphs. You might consider organizing your composition so that in one of thetwoparagraphs(per print) you discuss the printmaking process and in the other paragraph you doyour formal analysis of the elements and principles you see in theprints. Note thatfourparagraphsare a minimum requirement for the assignment. You may find that you need more thantwoparagraphsper print.
- At the beginning of each section, write the printmaking technique, the title of the work, the artist's name and the date in which the artwork was created.
- Insert or attach an image of each work of art to your submission.
- Next, discuss the following about both of the prints:
- Name the formal (visual) elements of art that drew you to the pieces.
- Analyze the formal elements of art and principles in the pieces. Make sure to list all of the formal elements and principles of design that you observe.
- To aid in your analysis, review the elements and principles of art in our previous learning modules and re-watch the How to Doa Visual (Formal) Analysis video from Module 3. You should also read my formal analysis of an album cover, located in the FAQs section of the Start Here module for an example of formal analysis.
- Discuss the specific printmaking process utilized in each of the two prints and if it is an example of relief, intaglio, stencil, or flat-surface/planographic (smooth-surface) technique?
- Describe how the visual elements (line, color, shape, texture, value and space) are createdusing the particular printmaking technique.
- How is the print a good example of the specific printmaking technique? Consider the types of lines, shapes, colors, values, and textures createdby each technique.
- For example, in a woodcut print, can you see the implied/simulated texture and lines of the wood grain on the print - or can you tell that it is a relief print and how? Doesit contain bold lines? Can you see the tool marks?
