Assistance Needed

David Cohen, a 24-year-old, single, healthy male has just opened an HSA in conjunction with his qualified HDHP. He wants to determine how much the account might be worth if he funds it primarily for retirement purposes.

a. How much would the account be worth at age 65 if David makes the maximum deposit of $ 3,100 per year for the next seven years before changing to his employers standard health plan because of family health concerns and discontinuing contributions to the HSA? Assume that David earns only 3% per year for the next seven years while he might need the money, but after he changes plans he increases his risk and expects an annual return of 6%.

b. How much would the account be worth at age 70 if David makes the maximum deposit of $ 3,100 per year for the next eight years, but he also has to take a $ 5,500 qualified distribution at age 28? Assume that David earns only 2% per year for the next seven years while he might need the money, but after he changes plans he increases his risk and expects an annual return of 7%.

c. If David took a $ 10,000 nonqualified distribution from his HSA prior to age 65, how much in federal income tax and penalties would he owe? Assume that he is in the 25% marginal tax bracket.
