Astronomy 1110

Lab 2: Angular Measurements

Outcomes

Identify and recognize the math skills needed for this course. (E)

Instructions

Answer all of the questions in the sections below. Questions requiring student responses have numbers, and sub-parts of questions are assigned lower-case letters. You should type your answers into the spaces below the questions. For questions that require you to do the math, you may either your work into the document directly or write your work on a separate sheet of paper. If you write your work on a separate sheet, you should photograph or scan your work and paste it into your document. For math typed directly into the document, it might look something like this:

y=3*x^2+7

y=3*2.5^2+7

y=25.75

Be sure to read the directions carefully and answer all parts of each question.

Background

Early astronomers did not know the distances to objects in the sky, so they used angles to describe the positions of these objects. Angles are measured between objects or between an object and a fixed point, such as the horizon. Angles are also used to measure the apparent sizes of objects. Angles are usually measured in degrees, though it can sometimes be useful to use an alternative measure called radians.
