At 1:00am you receive a phone call from the Chief of Police. Although in a dazed, sleepy state, the tension in the chiefs voice quickly brings you to your senses and you are horrified to learn that Snow White has been murdered with a deadly poison. You arrive at the crime scene by 2:00am and find that police have just removed a poisoned, peeled apple from a creek. Evidently, when Snow fell to the ground after taking a small bite, the apple rolled into the creek where it remained submerged under a branch such that water flowed rapidly all around the nearly spherical 3-in-diameter apple. Using the gas chromatograph you always have in your car, you analyze a very small chunk of the apple mid-way between the center and the surface. This analysis reveals a concentration of 0.00419M of a highly-toxic, water-soluble chemical. Later the coroner finds that Snows bite was 1.5 cm3 of apple and she ingested 7.5x10-5 moles of poison. By this time, the Chief of Police has 7 midgets (they call themselves dwarfs) and one old lady with a wart on her nose in custody. The 7 dwarfs were seen at work in a mine every day during the previous month from 11am until 9pm. The old lady has an alibi between 2am and 3pm of each previous day for the past month. Who is the guilty party? Also determine how much poison ended up in the stream to report this to the local citizens who are very environmentally conscience. (Assume Dpoison, apple = 5.0 x 10-6 cm2 /s for the poison in the apple).
