At Quench-industries, high-speed production lines facilitate the manufacturing of 1000 plastic water bottles per day. These are temporarily stored, then stage for quick shipment to bottling customers nearby. Machine set-up is costly and can take a full shift. Once completed, the plant manager sets the production quantity to optimize the use of the machines. Quantities are often greater than the customers current order, however replenishment stock is usually needed on a continual basis and stored quantities would move out with then next shipment. Sometimes customer orders are delayed and the accumulation of water bottles in the warehouse is difficult to manage. On rare occasions, Quench-industries must move additional stock into empty shipping containers as a temporary measure.
