At the beginning of the class, we talked about real GDP as as one of the three key statistics macroeconomists focus on when assessing the health of a nation. We defined GDP as the monetary value of final goods and services produced within the borders of a country, usually a year. We also discussed economic growth, increase in real GDP over time. We talked about growth being a widely held economic goal; that increase in output relative population results in higher standard of living. Nonetheless, Robert F. Kennedy in his remarks at the University of Kansas in 1968 posited, The gross national product does not allow for the health of our children, the quality of their education or the joy of their play. It does not include the beauty of our poetry or the strength of our marriages, the intelligence of our public debate or the integrity of our public officials. It measures neither our wit nor our courage, neither our wisdom nor our learning, neither our compassion nor our devotion to our country....
