At the Home Box Stores, a registered customer's order under $500 is automatically approved and a clerk at the Order Processing Department will directly proceed with processing the customer's order. However, for an order worth over $500, the clerk must first request for approval from the Credit Department before he can process the order. Upon receiving the request for approval from the clerk, the manager at the Credit Department will first of all check the customer's credit limit allowed by the company. If the customer has exceeded his credit limit, the order will be rejected. If the order amount does not exceed the credit balance available, the manager will then proceed to check on the payment history of the customer.

When checking the payment history, if the customer is a good paymaster, his order will be approved. On the other hand, if the customer's record showed a poor payment track, the manager can exercise his discretion whether to approve the order or to reject. Finally, the manager will return the approval request form to the Order Processing Department clerk with his decision. If the decision is to reject the order, the clerk will inform the customer immediately. If the decision is to accept the order, the clerk will submit the order to the Stock Control Department to proceed.
