At two o'clock in the morning, state troopers saw a pickup truck traveling at approximately70 miles per hour on a country road with a fifty-five mph speed limit. The troopers decided to stop the truck and cite the driver for speeding. As the troopers began to pursue the truck, it turned onto a narrow dirt trail that intersected with the road and seemingly disappeared. The troopers followed the trail and found the pickup parked in the middle of the trail with its lights off. The troopers shone a light inside the car and saw a young male adult in the driver's seat and a fourteen-year-old girl in the passenger's seat. They asked the driver, whose name was Darren Horton, why he had driven his car down the trail into the woods. Horton said that he pulled onto the trail so that he could stop to look at a map and get directions home. However, there were no lights on in the truck, Horton was not holding a map, and the troopers did not see any map in the truck. The troopers asked Horton to step out of the truck and asked him if he had any weapons on his person
