Auditing Assignment
Topic: Using ACL in auditing
The 6th and 5th edition of Louwers, et al. Auditing and Assurance Services has ACL software bundled with the textbook. If you do not have the software let me know as soon as possible.
The first step is going to the web site related to the edition of our textbook and printing the ACL assignment overview (it is listed on the first page of the web site and is shown in the left-hand side at the top in a box as ACL?I have placed this on canvas as a file). This shows the steps for installing ACL and starting the tutorial provided with the software. You may want to review the assignments from the authors since they give you some ideas ? but their assignments are not part of this assignment but can help you think about what you might put into your final report.
In the tutorial section, there is a booklet that should be printed or referenced ? it is called "ACL in Practice" which is a step by step tutorial of using the data set already provided. There are 7 chapters included in "ACL in Practice" and these help you understand how to use ACL, how to examine data, set up your project, and do analysis.
WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO DO?
You need to work through several of the chapters for the tutorial (at least the first four chapters) and learn how ACL works. You will not be an expert but at least you will have experience with the software and you have exposure to "data mining" software.
WHAT IS REQUIRED TO BE SUBMITTED?
A report (three pages in length) initially demonstrating your understanding of ACL and what it can do for auditors (internal and/or external). Then, and most importantly, you must provide examples of how you could use ACL (or similar software) in doing actual auditing procedures. You need to be very specific and provide at least five solid examples (number them so I do not have to search for your five examples) of how to use ACL and what you are trying to do from an auditor's perspective. You cannot use the examples presented in the tutorial.
For example, in auditing payroll, you might want to select all employees of a company and obtain the ranges of salaries or hourly wages paid to each person. From this listing, you might select ten people and trace their stated hourly wage or salary back to the appropriate supporting source (personnel tile with approved rates). You can reverse this and select from the source and tie back into your data set. Do not use this example in your report.
