Effect of heat treatment on the Spring Constant (k) of nylon 6,6 springs (15pts) a) From your Force (N) vs. AX (m) plot in the Lab 5 Datasheet, write down the slope of the graph for before treatment and the slope of the graph after heat treatment. The slope before heating was 222. 38 and after heating the slope was 89.247. b) What do the slopes of your trendlines physically represent? The slopes of the treadlines physically represent the spring constants of string prior to heat treatment and after heatreatment. C) Compare the spring constants from before and after the heat treatment. Which spring constant is larger? What does the spring constant tell us about the effect of the heat treatment on the spring constant? The value for the string before it was heated is larger than after it's been heated. This was discussed in the pre - lab reading - it's because heat treatment causes expansion which as a result increases the inter nuclear distance and that increases the potential of electrons which causes the stiffness of the spring constant to be lower. 2. Effect of heat treatment on the Shear Modulus (G) of nylon 6,6 springs (10pts) a) Using the values calculated above, as well as the values of the unspun nylon and spring diameters and coil densities recorded during the lab, calculate a value of the Shear Modulus (G) for both before and after the heat treatment. b) What does this tell us about the effect of the heat treatment on the spring? A larger modulus number indicates a solid is rigid, which means a large force is required to produce deformation. A small modulus value indicates a solid is soft or more flexibile.
