Background N is a middle-aged woman who works full-time as a land developer and is a mother of two sons ages, 3 and 18 months. She is married and her husband also works full time and during the day her father watches her sons. N occupies her time outside of work by cleaning the house, playing with her sons, exercising, and reading. N has been a family friend for over 20 years and has mentioned she wants to decrease her habit of nail biting. She mentions how she receives manicures but then engages in nail-biting behavior ruins her manicure and wastes her money. She also states that she wants to decrease behavior for health purposes by not placing possible germs from under her nails in her mouth causing possible illnesses. Operational Definition Nail Biting: Defined as anytime N raises her left or right hand to her mouth and makes contact with her fingernail and her teeth. This can include her mouth being open or closed. An example of the target behavior is N watching a TV show and begins to nail-bite. A non-example of the target behavior is N walking to the car and placing Chapstick on her lips. Data Collection Frequency: Frequency data will be collected by N through self-monitoring by an app on her iWatch. Frequency data is defined as the rate at which the behavior occurs within the selected time (Cooper et. al., 2019). Collection: Every morning before N goes to work from the time of 6:00 a.m.-8:00 a.m., she will track her frequency of nail biting. This will be collected on an app named Tally Count connected to her iWatch. She will have a section labeled Nail Biting and every time it occurs, she will tap the "+" button adding a tally tracking the overall total for those hours. At night clear onset and offset of the behavior occurrence. This data collection would underestimate the occurrence of the target behavior (Cooper et. al., 2019). during the free time of 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m., her husband will collect frequency data on his iWatch when he observes N engage in nail-biting through the same app. Rationale Frequency: Frequency data collection was picked for the target behavior of nail biting. This is an appropriate data collection for behaviors that have a clear onset and offset of behavior. (Cooper et. al., 2019). The target behavior has a clear onset, the nail being bitten and offset, the nail removed from the mouth allowing the rate to be tracked. The occurrences of the behavior can then be tracked based on the count, which would be how many times, and for what period of time. Then implement an intervention to help facilitate a reduction of the behavior which can be tracked post-intervention through how often it occurs for that amount of time to see if there is a decrease or increase in behavior (Repp, et. al., 1976). Duration: Duration data collection is using continuous measurement to track the duration of a behavior, displaying how long the behavior occurs. This is also defined as the amount of time from the onset of a behavior to the endpoint of the behavior (Cooper et.al., 2019). This data collection would not be the appropriate selection for N's current target of nail- biting. This is because it is inadequate to measure the duration of the target behavior because it occurs too quickly to record the accurate duration. Whole-Interval Recording: Whole-interval recording is used to measure continuous behaviors. Cooper et. al., (2019) states this recording is a collection used for behaviors that happen at such a high rate and can not distinguish one response from another (e.g., vocal stereotype). This data collection would not be adequate for N's target behavior because it has a Background N is a middle-aged woman who works full-time as a land developer and is a mother of two sons ages, 3 and 18 months.
