BACKGROUND

The Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) was established in 2001 and began operating in 2005. It is the final court of appeal, replacing the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council for some Caribbean Community (CARICOM) nations. It is therefore instructive that the time has come for all member-countries of CARICOM join the CCJ and make it the official judicial arm of CARICOM. In its appellate jurisdiction, the CCJ hears appeals as the court of last resort in both civil and criminal matters from those member states, which have ceased to allow appeals to the Privy Council. Do you believe that the time has come for Jamaica to withdraw from the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council as its final appellate court and accept the CCJ as its final court of Appeal?
