Bailey, a 7-yr-old M/N Bassett hound presented to the clinic with an intermittent 3 week history of anorexia, diarrhea, and trouble ambulating. Bailey was current on his vaccines and was on flea, tick, heartworm, and intestinal parasite prophylaxis. On PE, TPR was normal; however, the veterinarian palpated a mass in the abdomen. A complete blood count (CBC), chemistry panel, Lyme test, and urinalysis were recommended for Bailey as well as abdominal and thoracic radiographs. She tested negative for Lyme disease. The CBC revealed a moderate normochromic, normocytic anemia that was categorized as regenerative anemia based on the observation of polychromasia and reticulocytosis. Mild leukocytesis with a mild neutrophilia, monocytosis, and basophilia was reported. Platelets were normal. Radiographs of the thorax were normal (no metastases) while abdomen revealed splenomegaly. An abdominal ultrasound was recommended and revealed numerous lesions arising from the spleen. The veterinarian suspected a splenic tumor and recommended an exploratory laparotomy. The surgery revealed a large spleen with multiple lesions; therefore, a splenectomy was performed and multiple biopsies were taken from the spleen and submitted for histopathology. The histopathology report stated there was moderate cellular pleomorphism, hemorrhage, and necrosis present in the splenic tissue.
