Based on "12 traits of effective police leaders," a leadership style that can be applied at my workplace is one that focuses on developing a culture of rewards rather than a culture of punishment. This leadership style can effectively create a positive and motivating work environment. Hence, "good leadership changes individual lives. It forms teams. It builds organizations" (Olson & Wasilewski, 2020). By recognizing that leadership is about influence rather than position, setting goals for interpersonal skill development, expressing gratitude, holding people accountable etcetera, leaders can create a motivating work environment conducive to productivity. I work as a project manager in the construction industry, so emphasizing that leadership is about influence rather than merely holding a position of authority can help breakdown traditional hierarchies. Moreover, because my job is in a male dominated industry where technical skills are prioritized, when leaders prioritize recognition and reward systems to motivate employees, this leadership style becomes visible through regularly acknowledging achievements and contributing towards a positive work environment where employees feel appreciated.
