based on the methods that a leader can utilize to influence their followers, how the trait and behavioral perspectives on leadership apply in the workplace, and effective leadership approaches for specific situational needs.
In order to gain insight into the management strategy related to leadership approaches, you will utilize CBRE Group, Inc. as a focus company and review the Services section which will help you better understand their business. Assume that you were just hired as a manager in the Project Management segment and need to provide leadership to one of your work teams for an important project and respond to the following questions:
- Your first step is to formulate the most effective approach to lead the existing set of team members. Characterize the methods that a leader can utilize to influence followers by addressing the following:
- Reward Power: describe this type of power and provide an example as to how you could utilize it to motivate the team member followers.
- Coercive Power: describe this type of power and provide an example as to how you could utilize it to motivate the team member followers.
- Theory X: describe the type of attitude that you would have as this type of leader and how you would act towards your team member followers. Also indicate under what type of circumstances this approach would be appropriate.
- Theory Y: describe the type of attitude that you would have as this type of leader and how you would act towards your team member followers. Also indicate under what type of circumstances this approach would be appropriate.
- Next, assume that you have evaluated influence approaches and that you must now determine the most appropriate level of behavior that you should exercise as a leader. Discuss how the trait and behavioral perspectives on leadership apply in the workplace by addressing the following:
- Describe two traits that you believe would be desirable for you to exhibit as a leader.
- Define what it means for a leader to have a "positive affective state" and give two examples of how you would maintain this type approach as a leader in a difficult work situation which causes your team member followers to have low morale.
- Summarize the Ohio State and University of Michigan studies and indicate which type of behavior (for each) that you would view as being most effective for leading your team member followers.
- Review the Leadership Grid in the textbook and describe the position numbers (e.g. 5,5) that would be most appropriate for expressing your leader concerns for your team member followers.
- Finally, assume that you have determined that the situational favorableness of the current project and team member follower relations is low. Describe effective leadership approaches for specific situational needs by addressing the following:
- Define the terms leader-member relations, task structure, and leader position power. Assume that your current levels are poor, low, and weak. Indicate the type of motivation (i.e. task or relationship) that would be most appropriate according to Fiedler's Contingency Model of Leader-Situation Matches provided in the textbook.
- Describe two types of Path-Goal behavior dimensions that you believe could be appropriate for your leader behavior with your team member followers under the low level of situational favorableness.
- Describe how you could act as a transformational leader in leading your team member followers under the low level of situational favorableness. Include two specific examples of how you could "turn around" the situation so that it becomes more favorable overall.
