The website creditnet.com allows you to look at the many different credit cards that are available to everyone and allows people to look at credit cards that may fit their needs and even better what options are available for cash back or bad credit people. In addition, the website offers information papers on building a good credit, teaching money to your child early, and how to prioritize housing vs school payments after graduation.

How could this information help you to choose your credit card?

Since I currently have bad credit, I would click the option for people with bad credit and I would figure out what I could pay in the near future once I knew what my credit balance was to ensure if I would use that credit card for an emergency only that I would be able to pay the money back and thus not be held responsible for a credit card debt and have to deal with the negative stigma of an additional default or collections to my account.

Credit Cards

The FTC website contains a large amount of information with the focus of "protecting America's consumers" (Federal Trade Commission, 2017). The main page on this site includes a section titled "Take Action" that has several links to aid consumers such as "File a Consumer Complaint", "Report Identity Theft", and "Get Your Free Credit Report".These links allow consumers to quickly get to some of the resources that may be necessary for all things commerce and credit related. Under the section "Tips and Advice", there is a section for "Money & Credit". Under this section, there are many titles of pages providing information on scams as well as the various intricacies of credit card ownership.

Credit card basics such as the difference between a credit and debit card, as well as an explanation of key terms are present on the page. The FTC advises that those seeking credit cards should be aware of whether their card has a variable interest rate or not. Such a rate could involve changing the finance charges owed on an account (Federal Trade Commission, 2017). The knowledge of whether or not the interest rates are variable, as well as the knowledge of the grace period before finance charges begin, can be useful in choosing a credit card. An additional note is offered by the FTC regarding annual fees. Some credit cards carry a membership charge that could be paid at once upfront for the membership period, or that may be added on as a charge each month (Federal Trade Commission, 2017). A person seeking a credit card may need to determine if the annual fee being charged offers a benefit that is necessary or valued correctly. By identifying the value associated with the annual fee, a person seeking credit can better decide which card best fits their needs.

I had never visited the Federal Trade Commission website before, and after seeing it I wanted a time machine for about the 12th time to go back and slap my younger self for not looking sooner. There was a wealth of information which was tailored specifically to the military, which I appreciated. As someone who sees credit cards as a necessary evil, this website provided excellent advice on what to ask when getting a new card, whether bank or store issued.

This page also broke down Annual Percentage Rate to a level that anyone can understand, and described how outside influences can effect your monthly statement, though from what I was able to research variable rate cards are primarily issued from department stores.

One thing that seems to be far from people's minds as they buy things on credit is this simple thought: Can I AFFORD to have a credit card? Living a budgeted life means not spending money that can't be paid back, and that was another item I was pleased to see on the page, how to create budget. Between hindsight and what I learned by going to this webpage, I would say that this information has shown me not only how to "shop" for a credit card in the future, but also which ones to remove from my life for good as well.
